Two local school boys took the opportunity during their summer break to prove that not all teenagers are permanently attached to a games console or MP3 player, avoiding fresh air or hard work.
School friends, Barny Rafferty and William Moncada, spent a fortnight’s work experience on site with Lichfield-based property developer, Fresh Space Limited. For 14-year old Barny, this was the prime opportunity to get first-hand experience of the business and impress the boss – who just happens to be his father, Rob.
But no favouritism was shown as the pair gained a broad insight into life on the building site, putting in a hard day’s toil performing a host of onsite tasks from sweeping up, labouring and working alongside other site workers.
Sessions with Michael Dunn, senior project manager, and restoration expert, Neil French, gave the youngsters an education in the business of property conversion and development at two of the developer’s current sites in Stafford. Both developments, The Oval and St. Thomas’ Priory, involve careful restoration and refurbishment of historic sites and buildings converting them into stylish new homes.
The Fresh Space team was impressed by the enthusiasm and hard work that Barny from The Chase Academy and William from Maple Hayes School put in. Proud dad and group managing director, Rob Rafferty, commented:
“It’s been great to have two young apprentices on board showing so much interest and dedication to the job. We’ve tried to give the boys a realistic taste of what working on a site and complex developments such as these is all about. It’s definitely helped Barny understand more about the business.
With the Government’s pledge of three million new homes by 2020, property development is set to continue its expansion. We need to encourage young people into the business and equip them with skills for the future. It would be great if both the boys decided property development was for them. Getting out of the classroom and having some hands-on experience has been a great boost and helped them think about their career paths.”
