Lichfield-based property developer Fresh Space has proved once again that when it comes to quality restoration projects, it has the winning formula.
Members of the Lichfield Civic Society awarded Fresh Space group managing director Rob Rafferty a commendation for the restoration project at The Old Stoneyard, located off Dam Street in the city centre. Architect Brownhill Hayward Brown also received recognition for their contribution to the project.
Dating back to 1743, The Old Stoneyard was originally a tan yard and orchard in the possession of the Corporation of Sub Chanter and Vicars Choral of Lichfield Cathedral.
The restoration project created a range of two and three-bedroom houses and one-bedroom apartments that each sit sympathetically with the existing Grade II listed stable conversion, cottage and school rooms.
The Civic Society’s annual awards pay recognition to developments that offer significant quality of architecture, planning and development, with the aim of recognising those sites that make a notable and positive contribution to Lichfield’s built environment.
Tony Crookes, Chairman of Lichfield Civic Society, comments on the success of the project:
“The design of The Old Stoneyard sits happily within the open space of Lichfield’s stone fields. Its celebrated view of Lichfield Cathedral sets its context and the use of traditional design and materials makes its design appropriate and convincing within the surrounding area.”
The award provides recognition to a project that posed particular challenges to the developer. Group managing director, Rob Rafferty, explains:
“I am delighted to have received the award for The Old Stoneyard development, particularly as the site’s location within a conservation area and part of the project being grade II listed posed specific constraints on the redevelopment.
The project successfully combined the aesthetics of the surrounding area with the practical requirements of homeowners, incorporating natural materials and building methods that are consistent with other neighbouring buildings.”
This is the latest accolade to be received by Fresh Space. The company is fast becoming recognised as one of the region’s most exciting developers – often working with buildings and sites of historic significance.
